How much are we affected by Amazon today?
The Amazon site is being visited by around 200 million people every day. Amazon statistics show the company has over 350 million items for sale on its pages. And, around the holidays, some warehouses manage to shit out over 1 million packages in one day.
In the USA, Amazon is responsible for more than half of the entire eCommerce trade. Around 52% of Americans shop on Amazon. Even when they find something on another site, they go back to Amazon just to compare prices and see what the sellers there have to say about the same product. Nine out of ten people admit doing this.
The technology behind Amazon
Not too many people know that this is not just a regular retail store. Amazon is more like a science project. Behind the whole operation, there are over 560,000 people employed who get help from around 100,000 robots and 7,000 dogs. It’s a wide spectrum of different “species.”
What is more important is that high-tech software and gadgets are now helping Amazon in every segment of their work. The customer support and customer service departments are almost entirely covered by AI-driven chatbots.
The future of Amazon
When clients order an item on the internet, they’re expecting it to be delivered in a reasonable time. If you order a book on how to lose weight in seven days and you receive the book in two weeks, then why bother, right? Amazon executives are aware of this. Around the holidays, when there are simply too many orders, there’s no chance for anyone to execute every single one of them in time. So the guys at Amazon found a better solution – drones.
The drone industry has seen a major rise in the past couple of years. In 2018 it was worth $14 billion, and the number is expected to reach $43 billion by 2024. Drones are being used in many different industries, and Amazon clearly saw the potential.
Jeff Bezos announced this plan back in 2013, but it wasn’t until 2019 when they had the proper technology to make this a reality. The project called Prime Air delivers packages across short distances. For example, If you live in Indianapolis, you can order a book weighing five pounds, and a drone will deliver it to your location in no more than 30 minutes. You need to be within a 10-mile radius of the place where your product is located.
How about shopping without paying?
Sounds impossible? Think again.
The company made a store where clients can go in, choose what they like, and go home without paying. But how does this work? The whole place is covered with special cameras that overlook the products in the store.
When a customer picks up an item, the system recognizes this movement. When they walk out of the store with a product, the system automatically charges them via the app installed on their smartphone. There’s no need for credit cards, cash, long lines, or employees working for a minimum-wage salary.
A lot of people see Amazon as just one of the richest companies in the world. But it’s much more than that. It’s reshaping reality, whether we realize it or not.
